When looking for a petrol hedge trimmer there are a lot of variables to think about. If you are not picky then just go grab any old hedge trimmer, electric, cordless or petrol it doesn’t really matter, obvsiously… But there are things to consider with any hedge trimmer… Having a trimmer with a cord is always at the risk of accidentally cutting the cord off, haha. I’ve done that before, it was not funny except for the neighbor…
The advantage with a petrol hedge trimmer is that it is relatively easy to move around and starts/stops much like a chainsaw and requires about the same amount of maintenance. An electrical hedge trimmer can be extremely low-volume which is good if you live in a populated area… A petrol hedge trimmer can be VERY LOUD. Mark my words, it is nice to find one that doesn’t make you wear ear protection!
If you own a nice green hedge that is nicely surrounding your home or on closeby streets of residents, then it needs to be cleaned up and trimmed a few times per year… You don’t want to disturb the neighbors TOO much with a very loud hedge trimmer. But if you have a large hedge and need to trim it often then it is a good idea to go with the petrol hedge trimmers because they are far more durable than most of the electrical trimmers on the market, although there are some quality electric ones too.
Since they are running on petrol they can often be larger in size an power allowing for faster trimming. You are also able to trim in areas where an electrical trimmer wouldn’t be enough, power-wise and tech-wise since you might need a very long cord which would require and outlet close by. If you are a frequent trimmer then a petrol version is better.
Thin or thick teeth?
There are different common uses for hedge trimmers with thin and thick teeth and the length of the blade. Simple rules can be as follows: Smaller blade and thinner teeth mean more frequent use on smaller bushes or hedges. Larger blades and thicker/wider teeth mean more agressive trimming in things like bigger bushes, tree areas etc..
The last alternative is the pole hedge trimmer for use in higher areas or larger wall-hedges that require you to reach higher or wider. It is designed with a head and longer arm to make it possible to reach further… This is good when you work with gardening or things like that, the everyday user probably do not need this specific tool as often, but could still be useful.
